INSTRUCTIONS

Project 1A - Audio Dubbing

In this exercise, we are assigned to do audio dubbing for a particular clip from the movie "Everywhere, Everything All at Once". A muted movie clip is given by Mr. Martin, and we need to find out the sound effects and dialogues needed in each scene and record them in a google sheet.

After analyzing the muted clip, I successfully found the sound effects needed from online resources like YouTube etc. I have also done the audio recording part for the dialogues in the clip. With all these preparations, I started to move on to the next step- audio editing part.

Process

Firstly, I imported all the sound resources and the muted clip into a new project in Premiere Pro. I added the muted clip to create a sequence and locked it as Mr. Martin suggested, because it would prevent us from making changes on it, we would not want to edit the video. After that, I changed the layout mode to audio mode, which is better for audio editing.

Secondly, I roughly added the sound effects and audio recordings into the timeline as my first draft. I distributed the audio track into 10 tracks as Mr. Martin suggested, 3 tracks for three characters dialogues, 3 tracks for ambience sound and 4 tracks for sound effects. Then, I matched the audio with the scene precisely and accurately.

For the female voice dialogues, since I recorded the dialogues in male voice, Mr. Martin suggested us to use Pitch Shifter in the audio presets to change the voice pitch. I used the Pitch Shifter for female voice and increase the pitch to an appropriate level.

Some sound effects and my recorded dialogues have different volumes, so I adjusted them to a balance level.

I also used the audio transition effects- Constant Gain & Exponential Fade at the start and at the end of each ambience soundtrack to add fade in and fade out effects as it can smooth the scene transition.

At the scene where the tax audit (old lady character) opened the door, I also added the constant gain effects on the door
opening sound effect and the ambience sound which is the screaming sound from the crowd behind to increase audio smoothness.

The finalizing work is about the last check on the audio-scene accuracy and final check on the overall audio volume balance.

Project 1B - Sound Shaping

Week 9
In this week, Mr. Martin conducted a lecture about sound shaping by using Adobe Audition. He introduced the basics of sound and how to edit the sound into different kind of style.

After that, we are assigned to do a sound shaping task ourselves.

Requirements
Record your own voice for 5 seconds for Exercise 2 submission.
  1. Voice of phone call.
  2. Voice coming from inside of closet.
  3. Voice of toilet/bathroom.
  4. Underground cave.
  5. Alien/ Orc voice

Process
First thing first, I recorded a five second-audio of me speaking.

1.  Voice of phone call
The first effect I am going to do is the voice of phone call. To do so, I created a new multitrack and apply Parametric Equalizer effect. By bringing down bass, treble, raise midrange between 500Hz to 2kHz, the phone call effect can be achieved.

2. Voice coming from inside of closet
The second sound effect is coming from inside of closet. Parametric equalizer is also used here, but this time bass remains, treble to the bottom, raise midrange to top.

3. Voice of toilet/bathroom
To achieve toilet/ bathroom sound effect, I used the Reverb effect and make some adjustments to get the desirable result.

4. Underground cave
For this underground cave sound, I used the Echo effect to create the echo sound reflected by the surface inside the cave.

5. Alien/ Orc voice
The last sound effect is to create an alien voice, since this sound is undefined, I tried using the Pitch Shifter effect and lower down the semi-tones to achieve a deep mysterious voice.

Final Submission:

Reflection

This is a pretty fun exercise for me honestly, I enjoyed recording the audio myself and finding the sound effects for the muted clip. Overall, I think I am satisfied with my outcome. This is also somewhat funny because I intentionally used the punch sound effect on the last scene where the old lady uses the pipe to hit Evelyn (female protagonist).

The sound shaping task is also very fun, especially I can try out different ways to edit my own sound, pretty good experience and I have learnt how to use Adobe Audition which I have never used it before.
